Explanation of Polarisation Dependence of Differential Phase Shift in Two-mode Elliptic-core Fibre Strain Gauges

چکیده
An appropriate elliptic-core fibre theory is applied to model the differential phase shift between the firstand secondorder modes observed in recent experiments on two-mode elliptic-core fibres subjected to longitudinal strains. The theory provides an explanation of the polarisation dependence of the stretching SI2i, required to produce a 2n differential phase shift between the two modes as a function of wavelength for both polarisations.

Strain effects on highly elliptical core two-mode fibers.
Longitudinal strains in optical fibers have been found to produce a large differential phase shift between the first-and second-order spatial modes propagating in a two-mode fiber. This differential phase shift between the modes is both calculated and measured to be dispersive with respect to wavelength. For fibers with highly elliptical core geometries, which propagate only one lobe orientatio...
متن کاملEffect of Nonlinear Phase Variation in Optical Millimetre Wave Radio over Fibre Systems
In this paper, we propose an optical millimetre wave radio-over-fibre (mm-wave RoF) system that uses a dual drive Mach Zehnder modulator (DD-MZM), which is biased at the maximum transmission biasing point, to generate an optical double sideband-suppressed carrier. The input to the DD-MZM are binary phase shift keying (BPSK), quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), 8-phase shift keying (8-PSK) and...

An air-core holey fibre design that supports a single-polarisation circularly symmetric mode is presented. The mechanism that isolates the single polarisation, the advantages of the design and fabrication efforts to date will be discussed.
متن کاملPolarisation mode dispersion mitigation in coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexed systems
Introduction: Recently we have proposed a multi-carrier format called coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) to combat fibre chromatic dispersion, and have shown that a CO-OFDM signal can traverse 3000 km of standard singlemode fibre without dispersion compensation [1]. In this Letter, we show another critical feature for the CO-OFDM system, namely, its extreme re...
متن کاملPMD and PDL monitoring of traffic-carrying transatlantic fibre-optic system
Introduction: Polarisation mode dispersion (PMD) is an important factor in the performance of long-distance high speed optical transmission systems. There is clearly a need for a practical approach that supports the network provider’s planning and route design process for possible capacity upgrading in existing fibre plants, such as to retrofit 10 Gbit/s dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) ...
